Hopefully you will find two socket bayonets to suit.…. The rear sight base begins at 48mm from the muzzle & is 7.6mm long. The bayonet is well documented in Robert Reilly’s seminal American Socket Bayonets & Scabbards and is listed at Figure 99 in that book. The Barrel is 22.1mm dia at muzzle & 22.6 dia at Hanoveriam catch. This is a great example of an extremely scarce US made socket bayonet for use with the Prussian M-1809 Potsdam musket. I cannot see the tip in your photos, could it be a P/1839 that has lost 45mm? Your socket diameters would make it quite sloppy on a P/1838 & so what you have does not appear to be for that musket, unfortunately. Also the foresight on a P/38 is narrower & thus the zig zag slot of the bayonet is also narrower than on a P/39. The socket dia of a P/38 is a bit smaller that a P/39 & a true P/38 bayonet will not fit on a P/39 musket. Their overall length for a P/1839 is 538mm but your example is only 493mm, so a lot shorter unfortunately. ![]() ![]() Skennerton/Robertson note the P/1838 socket bayonet as being the same as the P/1839 except being. Hi Derek, your mention that it might be a P/1838 bayonet had my pulse quicken & certainly grabbed my attention, those muskets are exceedingly rare outside of a museum & I suspect the bayonets equally so, I very much desire one.
